What is a diode laser? Diode lasers use microscopic chips of gallium-arsenide or other semiconductors to generate coherent light. The energy of the light is generated by the differences between energy levels within the semiconductor. The wavelength may be varied to a wide spectral range. The high energy of medical lasers is generated by stacking arrays of the diodes. The advantage of the diode lasers is lower cost, a wide range of wavelengths, and smaller lasers. |
