What is Q-switching?

Q-switching is a way of obtaining short, powerful pulses of laser radiation. The “Q” stands for the “quality” factor of the optical resonator. There are many electrical, mechanical, or optical methods to Q-switch. The pulses generated by Q-switching are in the nanosecond (10⁻⁹) range.
