What precautions must be used with the CO2 laser? The main precaution with the CO2 laser is smoke evacuation. During the procedure, the laser generates a large amount of smoke that may harbor viral particles. Studies have suggested the presence of live viral particles or genetic material of human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis viruses, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Adequate vacuum devices and surgical masks are a must for use with this laser. The CO2 laser will also burn any cloth or paper that it contacts; therefore, appropriate fire precautions must be observed. Clear plastic or glass eyewear is adequate to protect the eyes from this wavelength of laser light. Patients having skin resurfacing with CO2 laser must be treated both before and immediately after the laser treatment with antiherpes simplex medication. |
