How does nevus depigmentosus compare to hypomelanosis of Ito? Some experts believe nevus depigmentosus to be a less severe form of hypomelanosis of Ito. The skin lesions of hypomelanosis of Ito very closely resemble those of nevus depigmentosus. However, hypomelanosis of Ito lesions are larger and more widespread. Moreover, 15% to 25% of hypomelanosis of Ito patients suffer from disorders of the central nervous system, eyes, hair, teeth, and musculoskeletal system. There is no single molecular mechanism underlying hypomelanosis of Ito. Some authorities believe that hypomelanosis of Ito should be referred to as linear and whorled nevoid hypomelanosis. |
