Can patients with nutritional disorders suffer from leukoderma? Yes. Patients suffering from protein loss or deficiency diseases, including kwashiorkor, intestinal malabsorption, and nephrotic syndrome, often manifest with facial, truncal, and extremity hypopigmentation. The hypopigmentation is believed to be due to dysregulation of normal melanogenesis secondary to lack of amino acid precursors for melanin synthesis and for normal melanin polymer formation. Normal pigmentation returns following treatment of the nutritional disorder. |
