Is dermatomyositis associated with internal malignancy? The true incidence of malignancy associated with dermatomyositis is difficult to define. In 153 patients with dermatomyositis, an associated malignancy was found in 8.5% of the total and 19.2% of the men. The cancer may occur before, during, or after the development of dermatomyositis. Most of the reported cases have been in patients over age 40, although cases in children have been reported. The type of cancer reported to be associated with dermatomyositis parallels the incidence of cancer found in the general population, though a slight increase in ovarian carcinoma has been noted. Patients newly diagnosed with dermatomyositis should have age-appropriate cancer screening, and female patients should be screened for ovarian carcinoma.
