The visa of a Somali family living in your town has expired. The mother is fighting deportation because she fears that her daughters will be compelled to undergo circumcision if they return to Mogadishu. What is female circumcision?Female circumcision is the encompassing term that Westerners use for several forms of culturally sanctioned surgical procedures on the female genitalia. It is most commonly performed in the predominantly Muslim nations of North Africa, where perhaps 100 million women have had the procedure. There are several forms of female circumcision, ranging from partial clitoridectomy (Sunna circumcision) to total infibulation (or pharaonic circumcision), the removal of the clitoris, labia minora, incisions of the labia majora, and suturing that partially closes the vaginal orifice.
