What is the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS)? The SMAS may be defined as the combination of the muscles of facial expression and their enveloping fascia. The SMAS has its origin in the superficial cervical fascia, and allows the muscles of facial expression to act in a coordinated fashion. It is an important anatomic landmark in facial surgery.
