What is meant by electrosurgery, electrocautery, and electrocoagulation?- Electrosurgery is the use of an electric current in order to achieve hemostasis, tissue cutting, or the destruction of benign and malignant skin lesions.
- Electrocautery uses a low-voltage, high-amperage electric current to heat a filament tip, which transfers the heat to tissue, thereby inducing coagulation. No electric current is transferred to the tissue or patient, which makes this a good choice for cardiac pacemaker patients.
- Electrocoagulation uses a low-voltage, high-amperage current to coagulate blood vessels by generating heat in tissue. The patient forms part of the circuit by using a dispersive electrode, which allows for a greater degree of coagulation than either electrofulguration or electrodesiccation (see next).
