How does one determine the direction of the RSTLs in planning a surgical wound closure? By simply pinching the skin in different directions around the proposed surgical excision site, the direction in which the closure will produce the least amount of tension across the wound (i.e., the direction of the RSTLs) is usually easily revealed. It is important to pinch the skin using the thumb and index finger of the same hand. |
