How does syphilis increase the risk for HIV infection?

The syphilitic chancre can itself serve as a source of HIV transmission in the HIV-infected person. An HIV-negative patient with a genital ulcer, such as in primary syphilis, can be at increased risk for acquiring HIV if exposed to an HIV-positive sexual partner.
