Name and describe the two types of photoinduced drug eruptions. Phototoxic drug reactions and photoallergic drug reactions. Phototoxic reactions occur within minutes to hours after exposure to both the drug and light and occur in all individuals given the specific drug and ultraviolet (UV) exposure. The rash clinically resembles a sunburn and stinging is a prominent feature. Photoallergic drug reactions are mediated by type IV delayed hypersensitivity and occur 24 to 48 hours after UV exposure. Clinically, the lesions are on sun-exposed sites, but are not as well demarcated as phototoxic reactions. They are also eczematous and pruritic. |
