Has there ever been a “leper colony” in the United States?

Yes. There have been two leprosariums in the United States, one in Carville, Louisiana and the other on Kalaupapa, Hawaii. Both leprosariums are closed; however, the National Hansen’s Disease Museum is open to the public and still located in Carville.
