Are most infants with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection symptomatic? No. Ninety percent of congenitally CMV-infected infants are asymptomatic. The other 5% to 10% usually have disease manifested by hepatosplenomegaly, hemorrhagic diatheses, and jaundice. The mortality rate in overtly symptomatic infants is almost 30%.
