Is melanoma a single disease?

No. Melanoma has historically been divided into major subsets based on the clinical and histologic appearance and varied associations with skin color, sun exposure, and anatomic site. However, recent molecular investigations have demonstrated biologically distinct subsets of the disease that vary in their relationship to anatomic site, sun exposure, nevus phenotype, and mutational analysis.
