How do you prevent tick bites? - Wear protective clothing, including long-sleeved shirts and pants tucked into the socks. The clothing should be white or light-colored to facilitate close and frequent inspection for ticks.
- Permethrin-containing spray may be applied to the clothing, where it remains through several washings. This spray serves as a repellent as well as an insecticide.
- Apply repellent containing N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) on exposed areas on hands and face. The concentration of deet in the newer preparations is in the 30% to 35% range to lessen concerns about systemic absorption and toxicity.
