What is an exostosis? An exostosis is a common benign bony growth that occurs on the distal phalanx, usually of the great toe. It involves the bone first and secondarily the nail. Trauma is thought to play a role in its development, and it most commonly affects adolescent women. It presents as a slow-growing painful mass under the nail with frequent secondary infection (Fig. 68-9). Plain x-rays will easily delineate the pathology. |
