What factors should be considered in selecting a sunscreen?
The sunscreen should block both UVB and UVA and have a sun protection factor (SPF) rating of 15 or greater.
Avoid sunscreens that contain fragrance, which can be a source of contact dermatitis or photodermatitis and can attract stinging insects. Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) also can cause contact dermatitis; all sunscreen products are now PABA-free.
Although some sunscreens claim to be waterproof and rub-proof or offer “all-day protection,” these sunscreens should be reapplied after sweating or swimming.
