What causes leprosy? Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, affecting primarily skin and peripheral nerves. M. leprae is a noncultivable, gram-positive, obligate intracellular, acid-fast bacillus. There is an apparent genetic susceptibility to acquiring infection.
