Is the prevalence of common and genital warts increased in HIV infection? The prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections is increased in HIV disease, including verruca vulgaris (common warts) and condyloma acuminata (genital warts). Lesions can be numerous, large, confluent, and resistant to standard treatment with increasing immunodeficiency. Condyloma acuminata occur in the genital and perianal areas, where it is associated with receptive anal intercourse. In HIV disease, the incidence of HPV-associated intraepithelial neoplasia of the cervix and of the anus in homosexual men is increased. Resolution of recalcitrant hand warts temporally related to protease inhibitor–containing antiretroviral therapy has been reported. |
